William McKinley [William McKinley]
(1843–1901) the 25th US ↑President (1897–1901). He was a US officer during the Civil War and a Republican who served twice in the US House of Representatives (1877–83 and 1885–91) and as ↑governor of ↑Ohio (1892–6). US power increased greatly during his time as President. He supported the ↑Spanish-American War and trade with China, and created the highest ↑tariffs (= taxes on imports) in US history. He was murdered by an ↑anarchist (= a person who believes there should be no laws or government).
